My Craft & I

“Why I Dumped My Job as A Civil Servant to Set Up NUBAN BEAUTY”- Stella Ndekile

Stella Ndekile, C.E.O NUBAN BEAUTY

NUBAN BEAUTY came into being after I got frustrated with my job; I wasn’t happy at my workplace. I actually began my journey into the world of makeup during my NYSC year when I took up a skill acquisition programme in makeup as part of my CDS. I learnt how to do makeup, facials, and nails. I was excited that I could do makeup and still practice my profession as a medical lab scientist even though my husband and parents didn’t quite understand me.

After NYSC, I started working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at the University of Lagos but I was selling makeup on the side. I found out that most makeup brands were not focusing on our skin tones and shades in Africa, and most of these products were expensive. These became the challenges I faced as a makeup seller, and I knew I had to fix these problems. I actually started as Stella Makeovers; I was selling makeup products and also continued as a makeup artist. Our first products were the beauty blenders. I remember how we took our beauty blenders and some other products from foreign brands to The Makeup Fair as Stella Makeovers. I took goods worth 300,000 naira to the fair and made only 30,000 naira at the end of the day. I got back to the house and started crying. But the good thing about life is that when you have a fighting spirit, you get up and fight back when you are pushed to the wall. I was dejected and couldn’t sleep but as I was scrolling through my phone, I saw

MOVIE REVIEW: Were We Called by Woli Arole’s THE CALL?

THE CALL is a fictional story of a stubborn young man, Woli Arole, looking for a fast means of making money in order to have a birthday celebration. He receives an unexpected ‘call’ which ultimately leads him down paths of a call he was always destined to answer.

Directed by James Abinibi, The Call stars Woli Arole, Hafeez Oyetoro, Segun Arinze, Kelvin Ikeduba, Yinka Quadri, Samuel Ajibola, and Etinosa Idemudia.

To be honest, THE CALL isn’t exactly a ‘MUST-SEE’ but it most definitely makes an enjoyable watch because it offers what it promises- rib-tickling comedy which seems to be a winner any day, here in Naija.

I was impressed by Samuel Ajibola who played ‘Augustine’, and Etinosa Idemudia who played ‘Iyore’. They truly are the MVPs of this movie as they delivered their roles exceptionally well. These two are the chief reasons I am proud to say I got my money’s worth!

Cinematography was descent and I honestly didn’t have any major issue with the production of “The Call” other than the fact that it didn’t score above average. I really can’t wait to see the day Nollywood starts to churn out comedies that can compete favorably with those in Hollywood. Until then, I’d strongly suggest

SECOND ACT Proves Jennifer Lopez Remains “Jenny from The Block”

JLo stars as Maya, a 40-year-old woman struggling with frustrations from unfulfilled dreams until she gets the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as book smarts, and that it is never too late for a Second Act.

Directed by Peter Segal, this feel good romantic comedy shows us how Jennifer Lopez keeps getting better with age. As expected, she is the STAR of this movie and does a brilliant job of balancing the comedy, love, and motherhood angles to this lovely story.

My favorite scene is arguably the most hilarious scene of the movie, where Maya has to speak Mandarin Chinese at a business dinner by getting lines from someone through an earpiece. The person feeding her the lines is a veterinarian who is busy checking a dog and somehow Maya mentions something about grabbing a dog’s scrotum. Hehehe! I’m still recovering from that one. Scrotum? At a very serious business dinner?

If you are a fan of feel good, relatable comedy or simply a fan of Jennifer Lopez as an actress, you most definitely should see SECOND ACT!
