Fashion Meets History: The Story of Western House, Lagos

Western House, an 18-storey high-rise building was a wonder to behold when it opened on Broad Street, Lagos Island in the year 1958. It was the first modern building which opened up on two different streets. From the Broad street end, you walked up a flight of 22 steps into a reception area and then a mall. The most glittering shop then was the Glendora Bookshop. Then there was the coffee shop where young Lagos elite and upwardly mobile came for dates.

There had been nothing quite like Western House before S.O Shonibare and the NIPC made it happen. The building was unique because it was a prime address that housed a shopping mall, a huge office complex and residential quarters at the top. With the establishment of Western House which signalled the dawn of a Modern Central Business District, Shonibare and the NIPC had become the builders of modern Nigeria.

When Western House opened, it attracted the cream of corporate Nigeria. Every company worth its salt and

Omoni Oboli’s MOMS AT WAR Gives New ‘Adeniny’ To Nollywood

MOMS AT WAR has simply come to school us all on what a cinema- worthy movie ought to look like! Before anything else, let me give you a synopsis of this great film.

Moms At War tells the story of Olaide and Ebubechukwu, two mothers who would do anything for their children. Omoni Oboli stars as Ebubechukwu, a posh career woman who was born with a silver spoon and expects her only daughter to follow in her footsteps. Funke Akindele stars as Olaide, a self made woman who built herself up from nothing to raise her son and give him the life she did not have. With their children competing for a place in a prestigious scholars program, everything starts to derail as the mothers go head to head to ensure that their individual child wins.

First off, this movie is in a class of its own “patapata”. It isn’t of the same category as all the ‘jagbajantis’ that have been served to us as comedy in recent times. The story is quite unique and very unpredictable, continuity was on point, costuming, very commendable, and the characters were more than believable.

To be honest, MOMS AT WAR was so good, I forgot to look out for errors. I still can’t point out any error. Not one! I am usually quick to pick out errors while watching films, but this one “pass me”.

If at this point, you are still expecting me to share spoilers from this movie, you are on a long thing. MOMS AT WAR is that one movie which gets an A1 from me. Unbelievable right? I could watch this film 100 times and not get bored at all. This has little or nothing to do with the hype around it, but the

MOVIE REVIEW: Seven AND A HALF dates Reminds Us Why Toyin Abraham is The REAL DEAL

Seven AND A HALF dates follows the story of a young hardworking lady, Bisola who is engrossed in her career and finds herself in a seemingly unending quest for love. Her father, Mr Gomez comes to her rescue and inspired by the game of chess, sets Bisola up on ten different dates which he hopes one of them yields a good prospect.

Permit me to give you a very honest and impartial review. Seven AND A HALF dates is basically a feel good movie which stars some of the most creative Nollywood actors.

This satirical work of art is a romantic comedy which sends a very serious message about domestic violence in a refreshing manner. The lead actors ensured we got the message WELL! Sola Sobowale, Mercy Johnson, and Toyin Abraham deserve some accolades for entertaining as well as educating us at the same time. I was particularly impressed by Toyin Abraham’s ‘Biodun, the annoying and talkative shop assistant character’. She was in total control, in her usual dramatic fashion, but this time not exaggerated. She gave off the feeling that she had been listening to critics as regards her role delivery in some movies which were characterized with overacting and exaggerated lines.

I wasn’t impressed with some elements which I must note here. I thought the picture quality of this film could have been better, and costuming, more sophisticated. I just couldn’t comprehend

MOVIE REVIEW: LARA & THE BEAT Leaves Me More Confused than CONFUCIUS

Lara & The Beat is a coming of age movie about the young and beautiful Giwa sisters caught in the centre of a financial scandal with their late parent’s media empire. The sisters are forced out of their privileged bubble and must learn to build a future and savage their family’s name.

Now, shall we discuss this talk of the town, somewhat controversial movie? First off, this movie is not a bad one but simply doesn’t live up to the hype and so much ‘senrenren’ that came with its promotion! The casting wasn’t properly done as I couldn’t comprehend why one of the lead characters, Vector who played ‘Sal’ was struggling so hard to deliver. How did the producers think the audience would react to this? It is simply UNFORGIVEABLE! I honestly think Vector needs acting classes if he intends to make something out of his acting career which is nothing close to his music career. He is undoubtedly one of Nigeria’s most creative rappers, but that doesn’t make him a great actor.

Seyi Shay on the other hand is a good actress; I say this because her “Lara Giwa” role was totally believable! She nailed this role, plus she was funny in a refreshing way. Seyi alongside Somkele Iyamah, Kemi Lala Akindoju, and Chioma Akpotha made up for all the unforgivable offences. The only issue I had with Seyi Shay was her funny accent which went on and off till the end of the movie.

Technically, Lara & The Beat gets my thumbs; sound was great, music on check. But there were too many faults that won’t just allow this film be great. Simply put, the producers of Lara & The Beat let us down! We were expecting so much from them.

As I noted earlier, production wasn’t totally bad, but the story wasn’t extraordinary, and the continuity errors got in the way. Some scenes dragged on for too long, and we (the audience) couldn’t understand what the actors were saying at some point as we really couldn’t fathom
