Fashion Meets History: The Story of Freedom Park

Born out of the ruins of Her Majesty’s Broad Street Prisons, Freedom Park is a memorial and leisure park on Lagos Island.

The park which serves as a National memorial, historical landmark, cultural site, and a recreation centre reveals the colonial heritage of Lagos. Freedom Park was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary Independence celebration in October 2010.

Designed by the Architect Theo Lawson, Freedom Park was formerly known as Her Majesty’s Broad Street Prisons which was established after Britain made Lagos a colony in 1861. The initial prison structure was built in 1882 with mud walls and grass thatch but did not last long due to sabotage from colonial government opposition. According to the architect of Freedom Park, Theo Lawson, opponents of British colonialism in Lagos, “kept throwing fire into it and setting it ablaze and so then in 1885, the colonial government imported bricks from England and rebuilt the prison”.

Some notable prisoners at Broad Street Prison include Herbert Macaulay, Obafemi Awolowo, and

MOVIE REVIEW: OCEAN’S 8 Wows majorly On the Strengths of Its All-star Cast

FUN is the word to describe the very energetic and mischievous octet served to us as the master thieves in a gender-reversed spin on the all-male Ocean’s 11 trilogy.

Directed by Gary Ross whose directing skills can’t be described as superb due to the epic flatness which almost makes the story numb in the middle of the film, Ocean’s 8 still makes a great watch any day!

The story is one of the reasons why I absolutely enjoyed the movie. Shall I give you a synopsis? Upon her release from prison, Debbie, the estranged sister of legendary conman, Danny Ocean, puts together a group of unstoppable crooks to pull of the heist of the century. Their goal is New York City’s annual Met Gala, and a Cartier necklace worth 150 million dollars.

Even though, the movie was awfully quiet at some point due to a few lapses from the director, I am more than delighted to inform you that Ocean’s 8 is one of the most exciting movies I have seen this year.

I was displeased by the fact that the top rated stars didn’t get enough to do in this movie. My consolation however, were the characters of Nine ball played by Rihanna, Daphne Kluger played by Anne Hathaway, and the hilarious breakout star of this film, Awkwafina.

Lest I forget, I thought Debbie Ocean’s character

MOVIE REVIEW: Paula Patton’s Pulse-pounding Performance in 'TRAFFIK' Reminds Us Why We Adore Her!

TRAFFIK is one movie we won’t forget in a long time because it leaves us cinematically satisfied. What a movie!

The film is about a couple on a romantic weekend in the mountains accosted by a biker gang. Brea played by Paula Patton and John, played by Omar Epps defend themselves against the gang who will stop at nothing to protect their secrets.

TRAFFIK is super intense and literally shows us what a thriller should be. It entertains us just as much as it enlightens us about sex trafficking in the world. It is my kind of movie because it leaves me intellectually curious and I was truly fulfilled by the time it ended.

I was particularly impressed with the camera work by Dante Spinotti, and stellar performance from the duo of Paula Patton and Omar Epps who were the lead characters.  They were absolutely phenomenal. I’m a huge fan of Paula so I went to see the film with very high expectations, and boy was it worth it! She was a delight to watch as it was obvious she had mastered her role and the requirements which

MOVIE REVIEW: Why You Should Watch RULE NO 1

RULE NO 1 is the romantic comedy to watch! Why? Because it raises the bar and so graciously defines the true meaning of a romantic comedy.

The film follows the story of two best friends Tega and Stephanie played by Chinonso Young, and Keira Hewatch who share completely different personalities; one is the life of the party and the other, conservative. Their friendship is tested when a play boy gets involved with both of them without their knowledge.

RULE NO 1 isn’t a perfect film, but a very good one; It tells a not so uncommon story in a refreshing way! This movie was so relaxing and lovely to watch. I enjoyed almost all the scenes and the characters were quite believable; I was absolutely blown away by Keira Hewatch’s performance. She nailed her role!

Lest I forget, when I say the characters were believable, this was up until we got to the concluding scenes where the ladies found out they had been seeing the same guy. I honestly wasn’t expecting them to make a joke of such a ‘serious matter’. Okay, maybe I’m old-fashioned and it really isn’t such a big deal to lose your virginity to a guy who is sleeping with your best friend. What do

MOVIE REVIEW- Moses Inwang’s ‘Crazy People’

What do you say when you watch a film, which gracefully serves you a superb production, stellar cast and a top-notch story? Well, you don’t say anything. You simply doff your hat!

Produced and directed by Moses Inwang, the movie which parades A-listers such as Ramsey Nouah, Ireti Doyle, Chigul, Monalisa Chinda, and a host of others is a psychological comic thriller which sheds light on mental health issues in a funny, yet educative manner.

Did I enjoy this movie? No! It was more than enjoyment, I learnt a lot from ‘Crazy People’. The truth here is, I can’t even find faults because this was a fantastic production which paraded highly impressive acting, and the icing on the cake being a thought-provoking message.

At the end of the film, I asked myself if this really is a Nollywood production because it simply lacked the common errors associated with Nigerian films.

Even though I thought ‘Crazy People’ could have been funnier than we saw, I was particularly impressed with
