My name is Yusuf Kolawole Kuddus, a fashion designer, and
creative director of popular African menswear fashion brand- Kola Kuddus
Couture. My journey into the fashion industry started about 10 years ago while
I was studying in University; I started out as a personal shopper but
eventually went to fashion school and started creating my own pieces. The
journey has not been an easy one but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
To be honest with you, I’d say fashion called me because a
lot of my friends used to come to me for fashion tips while I was in
University; they’d ask me to help them shop. I did this gladly and before I knew
it, fashion was all I was doing and it became a part of me. Fashion is about
culture and the expression of who you are. To be a great fashion designer, you
need
perseverance, passion, and love for what you do. Inspiration to me is
metaphysical; I get inspiration everywhere as a fashion designer and my mood
plays a huge role too.
I think you do not have to overdress to be stylish; all you
need is to have a good sense of style. I call myself a minimalistic designer; I
love little details and cohesiveness in styling. These are the qualities I see
in stylish people. Every designer is unique in his/her own way; we all have our
unique ways of seeing fashion and delivering inspiration. I started out doing
both menswear, and womenswear but later found out I had more strength in the
menswear category so I decided to focus on this.
I got my first degree from University of Lagos where I
studied Philosophy, and proceeded to Nobel Afrik where I bagged a Diploma in
Dress Making. I also attended London College Of Fashion where I studied Fashion
Design And Styling, Central Saint Martins, London where I studied personal styling,
I studied sales management at the City University, London. I got a Certificate
in Entrepreneurship Management from Lagos Business School, Enterprise
Development Center; this was a competition sponsored by Diamond Bank where 5 of
us won 3 million naira each.
